5 ways the crash diet trap is hurting you and how to escape the never-ending cylce of yo-yo dieting

Hi Reader

Welcome back to 1UP,
my weekly newsletter where I share all things health and mindsets to help you get stronger, feel younger and live longer.

The "Get-thin fast" schemes are dangerous

Research analyzing over 628,000 dieting hashtags over eight years found that 30% of all annual dieting activity occurs in spring — significantly more than any other season.

The panic of the incoming swimsuit season pushes people to try extreme cut down of calories, crash diets and other “get-thin fast” schemes.
This is fueled by peak body dissatisfaction, coming out of the winter slump, and a desire to look good in the summer.

However, these crash diets are very harmful for your health.
And the results never last.

What I call "crash diets", are patterns of food restriction that people get into for weeks to lose weight fast. It can look like:
- skipping meals to starve yourself
- going down to 800 kcalories per day when you need 2000
- removing all carbs or all meat or doing nothing but juices

In this episode of the 40s Fitness Reset podcast, I am going to walk you through how this spring panic can backfire when you follow the trend.

These extreme diets produce the yo-yo effect leading to:
• Exhausting cycle of hope and failure that erodes self-esteem over time
• Food obsession and an unhealthy relationship with eating
• Guilt and shame when weight returns, even though regain is largely physiological
• Anxiety around social eating situations
• Feeling like a personal failure rather than understanding it's a structural problem with restrictive dieting

I want you to understand the dangers of crash diets - weeks of extreme dieting, skipping meals or eliminating entire food groups - so that you can escape the never-ending cycle of yo-yo dieting.

In this episode I also share what you need to do instead to get your best body for good.

I remember times in my life when shopping for a swimsuit made me sneer, when trying it on seemed to only accentuate all the parts of my body that made me insecure and leaving the store completely down and dejected.

But now for the first time ever, I am actually looking forward to picking up a swim suit. Whatever I pick, it will be a reflection of my consistency at the gym.

My body is not perfect by any mean. I don't pay a ton of attention to it. But it's a body I am proud of. Because I invested in my health and longevity to show up at my highest capacity and live life to the full, and my body is just a byproduct.

Does this time a year bring up some anxiety for you when you look in the mirror Reader ?

If this is you, I am here to tell you that you too could walk in a body you are proud of. I have an approach to this that has nothing to do with dieting.

If you are interested in hearing more about it, hit reply, and I will be in touch.
